"Growing Your Own Food: The Best Things to Grow in Salem & How"
Speaker: Elise Bauman, Executive Director of Salem Harvest
Growing your own food can be a great way to ensure you have access to fresh produce all year round. If you live in Salem, there are several options for locally grown produce, and it's important to know what the best things to grow in the area are, and how to do it.At our next Chamber Business Women luncheon, Salem Harvest Executive Director Elise Bauman will share her experience growing up in rural Southern Nevada, where eating what you grow is a way of life. With the nearest grocery store nearly two hours away, her family had to plan their meals carefully and make sure no food was wasted. When Elise moved to Salem 30 years ago, she was amazed at the abundance and variety of fresh produce grown in the area. However, she was also concerned to see how much was being wasted and how many people lacked access to fresh food.
At Salem Harvest, Elise is now leading a team of volunteers in harvesting fresh produce that would otherwise go to waste. They then distribute it to families in need in the local community. Elise and her team are also continuously learning about agriculture in the Willamette Valley to ensure that they can make the most of the resources available and help as many people as possible.
